Abstract

Background. Currently, roll sensors are widely used to measure the roll of an aircraft. The article provides a comparative overview of sensors that determine the roll in different ways. Materials and methods. Special attention is paid to the IR roll sensor. The operating principle is described in detail. The influence of the optical window design on the IR sensor readings is described, the influence of the heating of the housing and surrounding gases on the thermocouple readings is estimated, and the influence of weather conditions and the underlying surface on the sensor operation is shown. Conclusion. It is concluded that IR sensors have a number of advantages in contrast to other types of sensors, and can be used to obtain data on the orientation of the aircraft.
